Christel Vergauwen

Christel Vergauwen received her law degree from KU Leuven, where she graduated with distinction on 9 July 1986. The following academic year, she studied at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in the United States, which earned her a Master of Laws degree.

Christel started her professional career at GSJ lawyers on 1 October 1987 and became its first female partner in 1995. With great dedication, she dedicates herself to her clients, focusing on the legal but also the human aspects in family law. In 1999, she successfully completed her training as a family mediator. In 2006, she was provisionally accredited and in 2008 she received her final accreditation as a family mediator. Mediating is her passion and it gives her great satisfaction to reach a solution together with her clients in their interest and that of their possible children. 

From 1 February 2010 to 30 September 2020, Christel worked as a practice assistant at the Faculty of Law of the University of Antwerp, where she enthusiastically shared her years of experience as a lawyer-mediator in family cases with young students in the various lectures of the subject of Personal and Family Law. Together with colleagues from her department, she regularly writes notes under interesting judicial decisions in the journal Rechtspraak Antwerpen Brussel Gent, where she is also part of the editorial board.

She has been a local ombudswoman at the Antwerp Bar since 1 April 2018 for the Ombuds Service for Consumer Disputes Lawyers.

On 27 and 28 February 2020, Christel successfully attended the collaborative lawyer training course organised by the Order of Flemish Bars. She was recognised as a collaborative lawyer in March 2020.
